Simeon's Song (taken from Luke 2:22-35)
Anticipating this all of my life, because of the promise You gave me,
Now I am old, my life draws to a close, and yet I still look to You.
Into the temple a family arrives, and as I take up the Baby,
From deep within me, my spirit awakes, I know what I’m saying is true:
That my eyes have now seen Your salvation,
You have prepared it for all men to see;
It’s the light of Your revelation,
A gift You have lovingly given to me.
Here in the temple my vigil goes on, waiting for Your consolation,
All my devotion is centered on You, seeking the One who will heal.
With trembling hands I reach out for the Child, given without hesitation,
Almost as if someone else says the words, the truth of Your love I reveal:
That my eyes have now seen Your salvation,
You have prepared it for sinners like me;
It’s the light of Your revelation,
A gift I have waited a lifetime to see.
May the Lord bless you and keep you in peace, though your life will be grievous,
Give me a moment to gather my words...I have waited so long.
This Child is destined to save us from sin—He, the messiah of promise;
Hearts will be opened and thoughts be revealed, showing the right and the wrong.
And my eyes have now seen Your salvation,
You have prepared it for all men to see;
It’s the light of Your revelation,
A gift You have lovingly given to me,
So now I can depart in peace, Lord,
Now I can depart in peace.
